Julep Maven July 2013 California Coast Collection

This month I decided to go against my profile style which is “It-girl” and decided to go with the Bombshell box this month. I really wanted to get the entire set but was good and restrained from spending the $55.00. I did however end up adding a nail polish that was worth $4.99 but I ended up using 750 “Jules” points that I’ve saved up and it was free!

This week has been absolutely CRAZY! There will be new posts up soon, I promise. I should be getting my June Glossybox on Monday. It’s funny, Julep shipped from Washington State on the 27th and Glossybox shipped on the 26th from New Jersey (MAYBE 5-6  hours away) and is still not here. Kudos to Julep for fast shipping and stress-free experience. I’m kind of on my last straw with Glossybox. Hopefully the American Beauty Glossybox is worth it, that’s all I have to say!

XOXO,

Erin

Not my usual post

This is not my usual subscription or beauty post. I really want to expand on this blog and make it more personal and write about what’s going on in my life. I’d like to start posting more regularly either every day or every other day!

1. DEXTER!
I can’t believe tomorrow is the 8th and final season of Dexter! I will be going through with-drawl when this show ends. I finally can say that I have watched every episode (thank you On-Demand). It makes me really sad when they cancel shows I love. On the other side of that argument, I guess it’s good to end a series when it’s still a good show and doesn’t end on a bad note. I may be weird but I love shows like Dexter. I wanted to be a Medical Examiner when I was in high school. Blood doesn’t bother me, there are things that do bother me (I worked in two hospitals for almost 5 years) but I will spare the details for the people with weak stomachs. I still have the shows Shameless and Homeland to look forward to when Dexter is gone. Are you a Dexter fan?

2. Coffee-Mate Caramel and Coconut

I stumbled upon this AH-MAZING coffee creamer while grabbing a few things at the grocery store. My first thoughts were “I LOVE Samoa Girl Scout cookies and I love coffee!” I didn’t have high hopes for this honestly. I poured some in a tall glass, put some 3 ice cubes in with it. Then started my Keurig coffee machine and let the coffee pour on top of the creamer. I took my coffee experience to the next level and made an amazing Starbucks-worthy cup of Iced coffee. I’m in caffeine heaven right now, don’t mind me. If Coffee-Mate discontinues this I will be so sad. Seriously the perfect summer coffee!

3. 4th of July

I can’t believe we are more than half way through 2013! Where does the time go?!?!? Independence Day is right around the corner and I am finally off from work this year to enjoy it! I want to go down to Washington D.C. to watch the firework show and take my 3 year old. The only problem with going down to D.C. of the 4th is it is insanely packed with people and HOT! 3 year old + Hot/Humid 90 degree weather + crowded+ Traffic afterwards = formula for disaster. I’m going to have to pass even though I would love to go. I would also love to go to the beach! I will probably just end up going to my parents for a small BBQ, and some fireworks – which is perfectly okay with me. What will you be doing to celebrate the 4th of July!?

4. Weight loss

Since October 2011 I have lost a total of 55 lbs. I went from 191lbs down to 136lbs in September 2012. Currently I am 147lbs because I somehow found myself back to my bad habits. I love food, I am a comfort eater and I enjoy eating good food. I crave salty foods over sweets. I can go without cake, ice cream, chocolate for good if I had to. I just need to get back to being on the right track and getting back to feeling healthy and looking good in my clothes. I don’t think I’m fat, but I definitely need to get my bad habits under control. I was never overweight until after I had my son prematurely at 27 weeks. I will be expanding on this goal of mine in future posts- including a “before pic”, weigh in, my action plan, and the story of my complications with my pregnancy. Do you have any weight loss advice that worked for you?

That pretty much is everything on my mind right now. What do you think of lifestyle blogging? I really think that just having one-two niches isn’t really my style.

Lazy, rainy days

Hello There!

Hopefully the weather is a lot nicer where you are. Right now it looks like it wants to rain and the humidity is intense. The sky looks so depressing! I had planned to do some hiking today but I think that’s not going to happen now. I’m currently sitting indoors, looking out the window and enjoying my homemade iced coffee (thanks to the Samoa flavored coffee creamer!!!!) I’m seriously in love with the coconut & caramel flavor! I have gotten some great news about some of my subscription boxes today too!

The Summer FabFitFun VIP boxes will begin to ship next week (Finally!). They initially were supposed to ship around June 20th and honestly I don’t know what happened but I’m excited to get my first box! They just emailed me today to tell me that boxes were going to ship next week and that they would be charging my account soon. This will be FabFitFun’s second box and they ship every 3 months and cost $49.99. Every season there is a new box.  The boxes feature beauty, fashion, fitness, and wellness. The items are picked by Giuliana Rancic  and the FabFitFun team. I read a lot of reviews of people that were not satisfied with their spring VIP boxes. I’m taking a gamble with this box but I really hope this month will be a lot better. The only thing I don’t like is that their website is going through a lot of construction and I have had problems logging in. Fortunately, the customer service team has been awesome and has answered pretty fast. To order your own box go to https://vip.fabfitfun.com/

Hello friends!

It is so hot outside I felt like I was melting when I walked outside and you could just feel the moisture in the air, It’s disgusting today.. Living on the East Coast the heat/humidity is redic. I will be blasting the AC and drinking a lot of ice water today. Kudos to those that don’t have AC or have to work outside in the summer, like my mail carrier!  I love her, but I don’t think the feeling is mutual because of the amount of boxes and packages I get delivered.

My Sunkissed VoxBox finally made it’s way to my mailbox! I did not receive any shipping confirmation but I was definitely pleasantly surprised! This is my first VoxBox and I have been registered with Influenster.com since February 2013. This was completely FREE and you can find out more about Influenster Here .

new subscription box- Poppy Parcel

Hello Friends!

I discovered Poppy Parcel when I was looking at some old Love Club Subscription box reviews. Poppy Parcel took over for Love Club in May 2013? This is Poppy Parcel’s very first box. I paid 19.00 + $1 to ship so a total of $20. The boxes ship from North Carolina, so I got my box fairly quick.

I ordered the first Poppy parcel subscription box and I honestly don’t know what to think. I like 2 out of 4 things in the box so that means it’s only half bad right?  I can’t really tell you a value of the box- since I don’t know where some of the items like the necklace are from.

Here’s my box:

photo (24)

The bubble necklace:

photo (14)

Beautiful necklace, only one complaint is that it was way too long for me.

Suntergrity foil sample packets “Natural moisturizing face sunscreen & primer SPF30  x2 :

I will try this and see what I think about it before tossing it in the “trash pile”. I like the idea behind this SPF- the packaging says “Suntegrity was made in honor of my mom and all of those who lost their lives to skin cancer. May you wear this sunscreen and smile in their memory.”

5×7 Coffee Print/business card/coupon from Penandpaint :

photo (23)

Isn’t this print beautiful? The business card is really nice too.

3 Hair ties from haute bands:

photo (12)

There were 2 coupons included in the box too.

Here’s my cons:

  • I feel like my box was packed in a hurry and looked really unorganized when I opened it.
  • I can’t justify spending a whole $20 on the products that were in my box. I don’t consider those hair ties or foil packets to even count towards the box.. I’m really disappointed.
  • There was only 1 paper product in the box.. I really thought there would be some more of those cute prints in the box, or something that would’ve made the box special.
  • I think the Love Club boxes had more of a selection and for less money.

Pros:

  • The necklace was cute (it doesn’t really fit me right, but it’s cute)
  • I liked the 5×7 coffee print by penandpaint.
  • I like the idea that they are supporting Etsy shops

Final Verdict: This box gets 2 out of 5 stars for me. I know this is their first box but it felt like they were very unorganized. I wont be picking up July’s box.. but maybe that’s just me? On their Facebook page a lot of the subscribers really like their box. I hope this box gets better in time. I know the girls at Poppy magazine worked very hard to get the June box, but it just didn’t work for me. I will be patiently waiting for July’s box reviews! Who knows, I may give the box another chance in time, but for right now I have enough subscription boxes .

About the box:

You can check out the Poppyparcel website to find out more about this brand.

julep destination mystery box June 2013

I was kind of disappointed with my first Julep Mystery boxes for June. I ended up ordering two of the three available and I’m relieved I saved $24.95 and didn’t buy the third box.  I ordered the Miami Destination box and the Laguna Destination box (the third box was the Hamptons Destination box). There are different versions of each box which can range from $70-200. Each of my boxes were both valued at the lower end of $70.

Mystery boxes come out after the monthly subscription boxes are shipped. Monthly subscriptions are $19.99 a month and right now you can use the PROMO CODE : Freemaven or Freebox to get your first box free at Julep.com . Mystery boxes are not a monthly plan and you can buy them without a subscription to Julep. The destination mystery boxes are now sold out.

photo (15)

I’ll start with the Miami box, which came in a bigger box than the Laguna box. I was so excited when the package came and that excitement was kind of deflated when I opened the box. The colors are great so I really can’t complain too much. I was excited because I had checked out previous Mystery boxes and most of them looked like a great value.

Here’s what I got in my Julep Miami Mystery box version #3:

Paris– Multidimensional holographic glitter top coat

Lauren– A hot tropical pink crème.

Isla–  A Soft milky-white metallic.

Dry Clean Invisible Dry Shampoo- $22 (Without the maven discount)

Strawberry mint lip balm – $6 (no longer available on the Julep site)

photo (16)

Swatches of Lauren, Isla, Paris :

photo (19)

The value of the box, without the discount makes it exactly $70

I tried the Dry shampoo and there is NO WAY I would pay $22 for this product. I prefer “Not your mother’s dry shampoo a lot better (and it’s only $5-6). I didn’t notice any extra volume or texture with the Julep Dry shampoo. I was really excited about using it too.

I loved the Nail polish colors. I think I would rather pay the $7-$8 and just pick out my own polishes in the store.  Paris was my favorite out of the three in this box.

The Strawberry –Mint Lip balm was a nice treat. The smell is delicious and I have already used it a bunch on my lips. I can tell it’s not going to last very long because it almost melts onto your lips and a lot of product comes off when you use it.

Out of the two boxes the Miami box was my favorite.

Now on to the Julep Laguna Mystery box;  I’ll start by saying that out of all of the Julep polishes they could’ve sent me as a duplicate- They sent me my least-favorite polish of ALL TIME, Abbie. If you read my posts you’ll know that I got Abbie in my first intro box in May. I was excited to find the perfect yellow summer polish UNTIL I took off the polish and to my horror MY FINGER NAILS WERE STAINED A DISGUSTING YELLOW COLOR! They are still yellow, a month later. I’m so embarrassed when my polish chips and have had to explain it to co-workers why so they know that it’s not some crazy fungus on my nails. It’s partially my fault for not using a base coat, but still. So my exact thought when I opened my box was “Really, Julep? You seriously sent me this??”Rather than give this away I might throw it away, I haven’t decided yet.  Maybe it was just my nails that it happened to. I still really hate Abbie and want everyone to hear me vent!  Ok now that my vent is done, on to the box!

Here’s what I got in the Laguna mystery box version #5:

Julep Laguna Destination Mystery box

Cody – Cantaloupe orange crème $14

Fiona – Electric lime neon green crème $14

Abbie – Sunshine yellow crème$14

Glycolic hand scrub- $23 (Out of stock on the Julep site)

Strawberry mint lip balm – $6 (no longer available on the Julep site)

photo (18)

swatches of Fiona, Cody, and Abbie:

photo (20)

The lovely Strawberry-Mint Lip Balm

strawberry-mintl ip balm

The texture of the Gylcolic hand scrub:

photo (21)

Value for the Laguna box without the Maven discount: $71

I did not like the smell of the hand scrub at all. It’s very floral and I’m more of a citrus girl myself. If floral is your thing though, this is the perfect hand scrub for you. I loved that it made my hands super-soft after one use, but I can’t get past the floral smell. I might be giving this to my sister.

I liked 2 out of the three nail polishes in this box. Fiona and Cody are nice colors and I’m actually wearing Fiona right now.

The final Verdict: Julep Destination Mystery boxes get 3 stars out of 5. I don’t think I will be getting another mystery box for a while. I paid $50.00 for both boxes and I don’t think I got an outstanding deal. Sure both boxes were valued at $144 and I only paid $50, but half of the items I got, I will not end up using.

Julep said that if you ordered one of each of the boxes there were no chances that there would be any duplicates, but I got another Strawberry-Mint lip balm. No complaints here, I actually gave the extra one to my sister and she loves it. I feel like they were just trying to get rid of some old products and didn’t really plan these out as much as I thought they were going to be. I think I might skip next month’s monthly box, but I haven’t decided yet. Maybe I was being a little hard on this mystery box, but no sugarcoating here! Just thought I’d write exactly how I feel.

Did you get a box? What did you think of June’s mystery boxes?

XO- Erin
